The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is committed to a privacy policy in keeping with the guidelines published by the US Federal Trade Commission and Duke University. By using this site and the services connected to it, you agree to comply with the terms of our policies. To better meet customer concerns or changes in the law, we might, from time to time, modify the terms of our Privacy Policies. Continued use of a Duke TIP website or blog constitutes acceptance of these revised policies.
What we do
Duke TIP collects alumni contact information from alumni wishing to contact other Duke TIP alumni or receive information disseminated through our main website, various blogs, and email newsletters. In addition, we periodically download alumni directory data and update our alumni records with it for use by Duke TIP only. The following paragraphs disclose Duke TIP’s information gathering and dissemination practices.
How we collect data
We collect data through our website registration system when alumni sign up to participate in our alumni directory. This information is stored in a private, protected database. Only individuals 18 years of age or older may sign up for the alumni directory.
We may also collect name and email address information from alumni or other visitors to Duke TIP blogs who wish to receive automatic updates or alerts on TIP resources or opportunities whenever new content is posted.
Alumni directory
The information contained in the online alumni directory is accessible only to registered Duke TIP alumni and Duke TIP staff. Alumni may only use the contact information contained in this directory for personal communications between individuals listed in the alumni directory. Use of the directory information for any private business, commercial, political, or solicitation purpose is expressly prohibited.
Failure to adhere to the stated terms of use will result in revocation of online directory privileges. By creating an account, you are verifying that you are at least 13 years of age.
Social media identifying information
We do not share or release social media identifying information about our site members to any other organizations, nor do we use that information for any internal purposes. Only contact information willingly entered into the alumni directory will be used by Duke TIP to communicate with alumni.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string in order to facilitate spam detection.
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service and an anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to this site’s Gravatar service so that it can determine whether you have a Gravatar in use on WordPress. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture will be visible to site visitors in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to this website, you should avoid uploading images that include embedded location data (EXIF GPS) because visitors to the website may be able to download and extract any location data embedded in the images you upload.
Contact forms
Information you provide on the contact form for the alumni directory may be accessed and used by other alumni for personal communication purposes only. It may also be used by Duke TIP to contact you about special alumni events and other activities, inform you about opportunities to engage with current TIP students, tell you about job opportunities with TIP, or announce fundraising campaigns. We do not share or release alumni data to any other organizations.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login information will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be immediately removed.
If you edit or publish an article on this site, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Embedded content from other websites
Please note that Duke TIP’s various websites and blogs may contain links to other websites. While we are selective about which links we share, Duke TIP is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of these third party websites.
Articles on this site may also occasionally include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account with and are logged into the other website.
Who we share your data with
When you provide personal data for the alumni directory, it is visible to and shared with other Duke TIP alumni for personal communication purposes only. We do not share or release alumni data to any other organizations and you will have the opportunity to opt out of receiving communications from Duke TIP each time you are contacted. Photos you upload to this site may be shared on social media outlets maintained by Duke TIP or used in marketing and communications materials.
We reserve the right to disclose your personal information as required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena, and when we believe that disclosure is necessary to protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, and/or to comply with a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process served on our website.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we have the option of recognizing and approving any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
